Project Netpop: Projections of the digital lifestyle

Netpop Research, LLC

What is Netpop Research, LLC?
Netpop Research, LLC is a strategic market research and consulting firm based in San Francisco. Since 1997, Netpop Research (formerly Media-Screen) has offered research products and services for understanding the digital consumer and digital market trends.

Why Netpop Research?
With the glut of customer data generated by the Internet—from traffic logs to blogs and product reviews—it is increasingly difficult for marketers to gain a holistic picture of their customers. The age-old risk of not being able to “see the forest through trees” is higher today than ever. Netpop provides much-needed context.

What kinds of products does Netpop Research offer?
We offer business professionals strategic tools to help guide more informed marketing and product development decisions. These tools exist in the form of primary research services, custom analysis and consulting engagements and reports.

Who is behind Netpop Research?
The professionals behind Netpop Research have been market researchers for decades, and have focused on researching digital trends since 1995. We are alumnae of leading research institutions, including Knowledge Networks, Nation Analysts and Research International, and have provided market research services to leading Internet companies, including Google, eBay, Creative Commons and Netflix.

How does Netpop Research ensure the quality of its data?
We developed, Market MirrorTM, a proprietary sampling methodology that improves the quality of online sample recruiting. Response rates vary across demographic groups, which our process helps to control. Additionally, this method obviates the need for weighting or setting hard quotas—enabling us to use online survey research to define the actual profile of target market rather than guessing or relying or secondary sources that may not accurately reflect usage among the broadband population.

Syndicated Research

What is the Netpop syndicated research study?
Netpop is an annual tracking study of the broadband populations in the United States and China. The study is designed to provide a framework for understanding broadband consumers—an influential group of individuals who increasingly shape public opinion and consumer purchase decisions.

Who is the Netpop syndicated study for?
The Netpop syndicated study is designed for marketing professionals—including interactive marketers and analysts, business consultants, brand and product marketers, media and advertising professionals, and researchers—who want to gain a deeper understanding of digital consumers and digital market trends.

What is the methodology of the syndicated study?
Netpop is based on an online survey of over 4,000 respondents per country (13 years of age or older) who are members of online market research panels. To qualify, respondents must access the Internet via a high-speed or broadband connection (any connection greater than 56 kilobits per second). Respondents are selected using a proprietary sampling process to ensure that participants entering the survey are representative of the Internet population in the target country based on age and gender.

Why broadband users?
Seventy-two percent of all Americans now connect to the Internet, and 55 percent of all Americans—or approximately 75 percent of Internet users—connect via a broadband connection. For years, broadband use has been on the rise, while dial-up use has been in steady decline. Finally, high-speed access is recognized as a “life changing” event – prompting users to use the Internet more, to do more online and to have a more favorable view of the Internet’s role and influence on their lives. Thus, to understand the impact of the Internet on people’s lives, both today and looking ahead to the future – it makes sense to study those on broadband.

What countries do you cover?
We began fielding Netpop in the United States in 2006 and added China in 2007. More countries will be added in the coming years.

What is the margin of error (MoE)?
Based on a randomly chosen sample of this size (n=4000+), we have 95 percent confidence that the results are statistically accurate to within 1.55 percent of the entire broadband population, if the entire population had been polled.

How can I apply insights from the syndicated research?
Think of the Netpop syndicated study as the ultimate source for a broader or more holistic picture of your online customer. Netpop research can be appended to transactional data, and used to develop more effective marketing and advertising strategies. It can also guide business development decisions, identifying new features or target segments. Finally, it can give agencies and consulting firms a competitive edge.

How do I suggest a question to be included?
Please let us know if there is a question or coverage area that you feel should be included in future waves of Netpop. Send your remarks to research@netpopresearch.com.

The data doesn’t match up with other data I’ve seen. Why?
It can be difficult to compare research. Sampling methods and question phrasing can have an impact on results. It is rarely the case that one data set is “right” and another “wrong.” Rather, different research tells us different things. Variations across data sets are one reason we aim to make the questions we cover in our syndicated study as comprehensive as possible.

How is the Netpop syndicated research sold?
Reports and graphs can be purchased directly online. Reports are purchased individually while graphs are sold in “Credit Packages” that allow you to buy a set of credits for 5, 15, 25, 50 or 200 graphs. Custom graphs, analysis and/or consulting engagements are arranged on an individual basis. Please contact sales@netpopresearch.com or call 415-647-1007 to answer any questions you might have.

Is there a time limit on the graphs/reports?
No. Once you download a graph or chart, they are yours to keep.
